Name: Phalanx
Age: 8,000 years
Alignment: Evil
Species: Demon (unique)
Height: 9’4
Weight: 618 pounds
Length: N/A
Wingspan: 14 feet
Description: An oddly-built gargoyle in appearance, Phalanx has a silver-gray coloration with almost no midsection, as if held up by his spine and the flesh surrounding it alone. His ribs are virtually exposed at this, as are the top of his leg bones, but other than these, Phalanx is actually very well-built, muscle wise. He does not bear traditional demon’s wings; instead, he bears two pterodactyl wings on both of his forearms, their wing-skin being of a dark-blue coloration. Finally, his head resembles that of a dragon’s skull, the skin pulled tight over the face, with a pair of curling horns adorning the back of his head, and his eyes change from time to time- either a flat, soulless blue in color, or simply a pair of red pinpricks of light within his eye-sockets.
Abilities:
Unholy Light- Phalanx’s main method of attack, and a rather potent one at that. At will, Phalanx can channel a harmful, extremely bright energy that functions just as sunlight would, other than its damaging properties. The shape and amount of damage depends on the time and amount of energy he is willing to use to create it, but he can use this attack in an extremely wide variety of forms, ranging from grapefruit-sized spheres, to massive lancing beams, to crescent-shaped waves, etc. The most energy he can output at a time with this ability requires up to 10 full seconds of charging, but can usually wipe out an entire city block (under the 10-seconds circumstance). This ability seems to have only half as much effect on inorganic matter than it does living things.
Daemon Magic- Phalanx is a master of the arcane art’s more subtle abilities, and can use it to extensive reaches. He can hide his presence completely (whether from sight, scrying, magical detection, etc); he can appear in entirely different forms while retaining his other abilities, if need be; he can create extremely-real illusions; he can perform extensive rituals capable of breaking minds or twisting shapes of mortal disposition; he can raise protective fields, designed to stave off physical attacks, magical, or even stop creatures of a certain disposition from entering; induce regeneration or healing in a target; the list goes on. However, despite all of these uses, this ability does not cover offensive possibilities.
Archfiend Traits- Because he is among one of the highest ranks of demon, Phalanx has notable natural abilities. For one, he is incapable of having his energy drained; has notable resistance to fire, electricity, cold, and acid; he’s rather skilled in the use of telepathy, but shielded minds are a bit more difficult to crack; he cannot be blinded through any means short of stabbing him in the eyes; he can summon a variety of lesser demons, the amount depending on their amount of power; and has a powerful resistance to all forms of magic- low-level spells have no effect, mid-level spells have a 25% chance of working, and high-level spells have a 50% chance to affect him. However, he is incredibly vulnerable to attacks designed to harm those of an evil disposition, and has trouble entering, let alone staying in blessed/holy areas.
Hell’s Aura- Phalanx bears an invisible aura that inflicts a clinging fear and paranoia into those of a mortal disposition, for no sane mortal can truly stay calm around one hailing from Hell. This ranges to about 60 feet maximum, and strengthens the closer one gets to him, the effects ranging from unnerved to mad, frightened screaming, depending on a target’s force of will. This also has another, more subtle effect- mortals within the aura slowly lose their willpower/mental resilience the longer they remain within it, the effect lasting up to an hour after they’ve exited the aura’s radius. Can be suppressed at will.
Personality: A fiend in every sense of the term, Phalanx is truly a bastard among bastards. An extremely cunning, underhanded and intelligent entity, Phalanx will use anything and everything he can to get he wants. He’s an excellent actor, tactician, commander, and fighter, all rolled into one foul package. He enjoys inflicting pain and misery into his victims, as all demons do, but will do so in such extensive manners, always finding the time in his schedule to push other events aside. He’s terribly arrogant, and can have a short temper, despite seeming to have every event planned out before it happens…
History: Phalanx seems to have existed for at least a millennia, where he once reigned over an entire section of Avernus as an archfiend, using the power of the Demon Crests to destroy anyone who opposed him- even the Barons of Hell were hesitant to interfere with him. Fortunately, it would end by the hand of an extremely determined demon known as Firebrand, whom Phalanx had originally stolen the Crests from. Firebrand defeated the archfiend after several long, Hell-shaking battles, and Phalanx went into a long hiding after faking his death in the final encounter. For over 2000 years, he has been licking his wounds, seething in rage, hoping to reclaim his empire and take revenge on Firebrand, as well as reclaim the Crests. After his long disappearance, Phalanx has made himself known in the Demon Realm once more, and not in a good way- he’s openly threatened and caused major problems for several other archfiends, including his old general Arma, and was last heard to have entered the Material Plane, in the hopes of following a rumor that Firebrand had taken the Crests there. Though he is pursued by all manner of demons, he’ll do anything to attain his goals.
Equipment/Belongings:
Argosax The Chaos- A rather powerful Devil Arm, this weapon appears to be nothing more than a writhing mass of fiery orange energy in the vague shape of a 1-foot rod. However, it can take the shape of any melee weapon the wielder wishes it to, ranging from swords, to scythes, to axes, to whips, etc. It cannot exceed a total area of 20 feet, and bears the same 10-pound weight no matter what form it’s in. The energy it exudes is extremely chaotic, and has a tendency to interfere with nearby magical energies (except the wielder’s own), and may cause wounds that take up to three times longer than normal to heal.
