((AKA ‘A New Star Is Born’))
A single streak of angry red light shot across the endless depths of the ether, that light being none other than the badly-battered Cromian Patriarch Nexus. He had breached the outermost layer of atmosphere several minutes ago, using the time to heal the wounds that should’ve killed him, were it not for his potent level of regeneration. His four eyes constantly swept back and forth, scanning the region of emptiness around him for the object he so desired at the moment- Battleship Tenkyanon.
[glow=purple,2,300]damnit… judging from where the beam had to have come from… and this planet’s rotation… the ship should be in this general area… so… WHERE IS IT…?![/glow]
He wrang his clawed hands to the point where the sharp digits began to dig through the armor on his hand.
[glow=purple,2,300]I won’t tolerate this any longer… my race is now literally on the brink of extinction… all thanks to those wretched Earthlings and the Harbinger… but no! It ends here! With that vessel, surely I can bring my race forth from the ashes! Not even the Legacy of Thalea will-[/glow]
He abruptly whirled around at that moment, focusing and reinforcing his barrier into a specific section in front of him. This action caused an incoming Shining Star Buster to be partially deflected, its remnants spraying out to the sides, making the barrier become visible and crackle under the pressure. Nexus’s eyes narrowed hatefully at the source of that attack, then incoming blue-white light charging straight at him from the blue planet nearby. Corona Varion had already caught up with the Cromian King, having a maximum flight speed of four times that of Nexus’s. The black titan issued a silent scream of defiance at the incoming Harbinger as he charged forth in return, the very dark matter-filled void around him beginning to shimmer. The moment the two impacted into each other, metal sheerings and various bodily fluids began drifting away from them, both parties tearing into each other relentlessly until a point-blank surge of dark matter, doubled in strength from their surroundings, tore into Varion and sending him flying backwards.
A good portion of the Astral Harbinger’s chest-plating had been blown away, revealing the fluid-slicked biomechanical flesh underneath, of which itself was cratered in and smoking. He clutched at the raw, exposed area in pain before glaring back at Nexus, flaring up his jets as his shoulders simultaneously opened, drawing large amounts of energy into their three hemispheres. CV slammed through Nexus’s barrier with little difficulty before shoving a Meteor Blitz into Nexus’s chest and lodging it there before a simultaneous blast of the Nebula Pulse and the Meteor Blitz’s finale sent Nexus hurtling back extremely quickly, roaring silently from the copious amount of pain he felt. Both then smashed their clawed fists into each other’s faces upon colliding for yet another time, breaking off chunks of both combatant’s faceplates as the drifted apart again.
Both stared eachother down for several minutes, CV’s heat slowly becoming visible as Nexus’s damage tried feebly to repair itself again. Then, at that exact moment, both the Knight of Thalea and the Father of Cromians had the exact same thought:
[glow=white,2,300]Your reign of terror has gone on for far too long now… and I intend to end it, HERE AND NOW!![/glow]
The two fired off repeatedly-connecting blasts of their respective energy at one-another, the resulting bursts of energy chaining across the ether as they pressed their fight along the Earth’s atmosphere. Corona Varion broke through Nexus’s barrier with a Shining Star Buster, sweeping the rest of the beam along Nexus’s front, carving a deep gash and destroying his left shoulder. Nexus returned the strike with several conical bursts of powered-up dark matter, of which tore through CV’s defenses… and body, with little difficulty. Large, ugly gashes now made their way across Varion’s left flank, across the right shoulder, and the right thigh, the Astral Harbinger now surrounded by his own flakes of metal and flesh.
It was then Nexus rushed forward, four points on his body turning a bright neon-blue in color…
[glow=purple,2,300]For too long my race has been forced to run in fear, to hide in the shadows and cower because of YOUR kind! BUT NO LONGER! I’LL DESTROY YOUR LEGACY WITH MY OWN TWO HANDS, AND ENSURE THAT -MINE- WILL NOT ONLY CONTINUE, BUT THRIVE!! NOW, HARBINGER-! FEEL MY WRATH, THE COMBINED HATE, FEAR, AND SORROW OF THE CROMIAN RACE!!![/glow] Nexus thought as he sped across their pitch-black battlefield.
The moment he seemed about to impact Varion, he unleashed his Mega Graviton Wave, enveloping the Harbinger in an intensely bright flash of light. The light faded, and Varion shot backwards out of the blast’s radius, horribly ravaged and mangled. His front most armor (what was left of it) had literally been forced into a jagged ‘shockwave’ pattern, starting at the hole in his armor, giving him a slightly more jagged, thin look. Snaking cracks were scattered all along the armor as well, thick, blood-like fluid oozing out of them, light from the sun making the multitude of metal particles glisten like snow as Varion weakly attempted to stop himself with his jets. He managed to slow himself down to such a stop as Nexus threw his head back in a muted laugh, then slowly narrowed his eyes at Varion.
[glow=purple,2,300]Hurts, doesn’t it? Now you know our pain… the pain we’ve felt for our measly 10 cycles of existence… all because of you and those WRETCHED THALEANS… but… I can safely say… that with your nearing end, our kind shall begin anew… we’ll enter a prosperous age of joy, without fear! Without hate! And I shall be the one to push them into this age! It shall all start…[/glow]
His shoulder pylons began to issue two different glows- a red one and a blue one as he started to rush forward one last time, eyes ‘bloodshot’ with black veins as he did so.
[glow=purple,2,300]WITH YOUR END!!![/glow]
The shattered Harbinger could only watch as Nexus barreled forward, his Cross Smasher growing in strength. Slowly, both the Thalean Knight’s left hand clenched, the plating on it beginning to pull away from the arm itself.
[glow=white,2,300]You know… at times, we did question the Cromian’s acts, and if we had the right to do what we did… especially after you betrayed us, Nexus… but we saw that the Thalean’s words truly came to light the last time we defeated you… we saw your insane drive to resurrect this race of MONSTERS, for no other word could truly describe that race of life-snatching parasites. Your claims were nothing but lies, hidden by the veil of your own arrogance. As our host stated before, you do not deserve life. You have not earned it. You think you can evolve past your bestial hunger, but it only grows daily.[/glow]
The plates on Corona Varion’s left arm finally segmented and split apart, still attached only by biomechanical tendons and metal stilts. The flesh beneath revealed several organic vents, as well as a multitude of small, neon-white lines leading up to the back of the hand, of which only segmented around the palm (but did not detach), said palm glowing with the same neon-white light. Then, something strange began to happen- all the small particles of matter in the area- both fighter’s flesh, armor, and even the cosmic dust that had been there before-hand… it all started to spiral towards Varion. From there, it all began to form a cartwheel-like pattern, the matter all turning about in the palm of his now odd-looking left hands, churning together and compacting…
[glow=white,2,300]I see nothing has changed since that time. You’re still a power-hungry bastard wanting control over a race, using a mix of their self-earned ‘troubles’ and the control you wrenched from the original Patriarch as a way to garner and force their trust… disgusting. Not only are you a monster yourself, you’re a liar and a thief…[/glow]
The sphere of matter in his hand was spiraling and compacting at an extreme rate- so extreme, in fact, that the heat generated from the hand and this process actually began to fuse the matter together into a golf-ball-sized sphere of white plasma. The Master of Ether slowly righted himself as this sphere slowly grew in size, growing from sizes of that of an orange, then a grapefruit, then a basketball, and so on, drawing in more and more loose matter to fuel it’s growth.
[glow=white,2,300]THAT is why we thwarted you and your kind at every turn. The Varion system was created to keep this kind of thing from happening! You yourself should have known this, you bloody traitor! But no! You blinded yourself with the opportunity! Instead, you chose to chain yourself to the same fate the rest of the Cromians bore-! DESTRUCTION, BY MY HAND!!![/glow]
CV’s eyes abruptly gained their inner light back as his jets began to flare once more, drained by the toll of the attack Varion was forming at the moment, yet enough to propel him forward one last time. Nexus had been far too ‘caught up in the moment’ as he rushed towards Varion, but before he noticed the sphere in his old rival’s hand, it was too late…
[glow=purple,2,300]NOOO!!! NOOOOO!!!! IT CANNOT END THIS WAY! NOT AGAIN!![/glow] He mentally screamed, trying to propel himself backwards.
Corona Varion’s hand shoved itself through Nexus’s already-weakened barrier, the sphere flaring as it picked away bits and pieces of Nexus’s front away… then disappeared as the entire limb ran itself into Nexus’s chest. Nexus gave one last muted scream as he began to compress into himself while steadily glowing a dim white, his very form starting to break apart from the sheer pressure. What form of attack could be causing such a thing to occur? Corona Varion’s most powerful attack… a literal star, which was currently using Nexus to fuel it’s growth.
[glow=white,2,300]I WILL END YOUR REIGN OF TERROR, CROMIAN!! HERE, ABOVE THIS TINY BLUE PLANET YOU BELIEVED WAS SO EASILY CONQUERED! THE HOPES, THE SURVIVAL OF THAT ENTIRE PLANET AND ITS RACES ARE ON MY SHOULDERS- AND I SHALL BEAR THAT BURDEN ONCE MORE!!! AND SO, WITH THE STRENGTH OF MY LOST CIVILIZATION, AND A SINGLE MERE HUMAN’S FORCE OF WILL, I SAY THIS- GOODBYE FOR THE LAST TIME, NEXUS!!![/glow] Corona Varion thought, ablaze with this overwhelming rush of power.
Moments before Nexus was completely enveloped in the glow of a new proto-star, he launched his own counter-attack, his last-ditch effort- the Cross Smasher he’d been charging. The blast bore into the large ‘crater’ on Corona Varion’s severely-weakened chest with enough force to go completely through the Astral Harbinger’s entire torso, the spiraling blast erupting forth from the Knight of Thalea’s back in a spray of ravaged flesh and shattered metal.
[glow=purple,2,300]If I cannot continue on… then I shall take your life with mine…[/glow] Nexus thought with a defiant smirk.
What was once the Cromian Patriarch, a scourge of the cosmos, was now a massive sphere of brilliant white heat and gas, rapidly expanding before it broke apart upon reaching its full, 300-feet in diameter. The ravaging attack shone down on the planet below for about a dozen seconds, an oddly-beautiful light in the fading-to-twilight sky in the city of Nightshade before losing its glow and dissipating into a mass of white fumes and cosmic dust. Meanwhile, the one who had created such a spectacle was now lifelessly drifting towards the planet nearby, the gaping hole in its chest a sign of its condition. But, though the body showed no signs of life as it hit the atmosphere, the mind itself- all three, actually- were running through a few last bits of dialogue.
“That’s it… it’s over… it’s finally over… our duty’s… been fulfilled…” Varion muttered.
“Indeed it has, brother… indeed it has. Our planet… countless others… are avenged… and… others still in existence… are saved… the Cromian menace is no more. However… there is one… last thing… I’d like to know…” Ryouki weakly replied.
Both mindsets went silent as they awaited the third, the biological component, to speak his mind.
“Was… was it worth it…?” Varion meekly asked.
Corona Varion’s head slowly shook, what was left of its right arm stretching forward, seeming to grasp at nothing… but, to the human within, it seemed to be caressing a distant star…
“In the end… yeah… yeah, it was worth it… my meager life… for countless others… I’d say it’s a fair trade. Sure… I never got to experience a lot of things… college… a relationship… hell, I never really got to -live- in my last year or so… I regret that the most… but… I guess… it’s all in the past now… nothing more I can do than… this last sacrifice… though…”
His hand seemed to tighten around the star he was so enamored with at the moment, and for a moment… under the faceplate… the bloodied biomechanical flesh… it twisted into a smile. A small amount of moisture escaped the sides of Corona Varion’s eyes, floating away from his quickly as they escaped into the depths of space.
“Knowing… that I died… after… realizing all of this… somehow… lessens the impact of it all… I’m… I’m actually glad… that I didn’t pass on… as bitter as I was… in those last few days… so… yeah… I think… it’s worth it… if I… can die… happy…” He finished.
Ryouki and Varion both gave silent, metaphysical nods of approval at this, and then uttered their final words, Ryouki going first…
“It’s been an honor working with yet another human… there’s quite a few of your kind that ain’t so bad… and I’m honored that we could part ways on the field of battle… I should hope we meet again, in another life…”
From there on, the wyrm was silent, having become deceased. His brother was silent for a bit as Corona Varion as a whole started to turn a fiery red from the speed of its unnatural descent.
“Well, kid, it’s been fun… you’re a stubborn ass, but that’s what I like about your kind… it’s like you said, humans just don’t give up… and you proved it to the end… ... let’s hope… there is an afterlife… I’d like to know… … … well, seems… it’s my time to go, now… hate to leave you like this, but… I’m afraid I can’t keep going… see ya later, kid…”
At that point in time, the Thalean Legacy, the Astral Harbinger, the Hope of the Stars… Varion… became nothing more than a name in the canals of time. Garrett issued a sigh, now alone as he plummeted towards his planet in a fiery wave. In his last moments, Garrett looked to the stars one last time… and his final words were uttered- no… his final words were quietly sung in a quiet, husky tone.
“And now that we’re here… so far awaaay … all the struggle we thought… was in vain~ … … and all the mistakes… one life contains…they all finally… start to go away … and now that we’re here… so far away… and I feel like… I can face the day… … I can forgive… and I’m… not ashamed… … … to be… the person… that I am… today…”
With that, Corona Varion’s host, its organic core, its driving force… the single, lonely young man… finished his fall to earth in content silence, awaiting the journey to the other side…
