The coal mine was located just above the forestline, the miners ran out and in, trying to clear the tunnel out after a cave-in had occured. The mine was almost completely inoperable, and over half of the miners had been trapped inside. Speaking of whom, several of the miners had attempted to find a way out, their efforts fruitless.
"How the hell'd this happen? Why today? It's almost Valentines, and my girlfriend's gonna be worried about me!" One of the younger miners moaned nervously.
"Just shut up; you're wasting oxygen." Someone in the front muttered.
They were hacking at a wall they thought led to the outside, for they saw a dim light glowing through some of the rocks. With a final heave, one of the workers broke through the wall, the others stopping to widen the hole, all yipping for joy.
But no joy was to be had.
Instead of the outside, they had found a massive stone cavern, lined with some sort of glowing rock. The cavern was a good 300 feet in height, and about 250 feet across. There seemed to be... something sticking out of the center of the cavern. A large mound of what seemed to be hard, green rock. The workers gathered around, and scrathced their heads, for there seemed to be a few boulders of rock around it, though the rocks looked to have been broken off...
"What'ya reckon it is?" Someone asked.
They all exchanged glances and shrugs before a horrid screeching moan filled the area, and the workers were forced to grit their teeth and cover their ears.
"WHAT'S THAT SOUND?!"
The shrieking suddenly died down, but a shaking took its place. Suddenly, the 'bump' in the center rose, then large cracks ran from the center of the bump to the walls of the cavern as the bump continued to rise. The miners backed away before running towards their entrance, but the shaking caused a few rocks to land in front of it. They screamed and panicked as the shriek returned, and a large shadow covered them all...
They turned to see two large, multifacteted eyes staring at them before a pair of mandibles encomapssed them. The beast stood up and spread six beetle-like wings, then burst out of the cavern in a spray of rock. The miners outside shouted and yelled as they began to flee, the insectoid observing them in interest. It turned its head to the city and clicked its mandibles, before bouncing off of the mountain and launching towards the city...
